The Internet Development Institute (IRI) invited the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation to introduce e-sports classes in the optional school program for teenage and youth age groups, reports Gmbox.
This is a pilot in the framework of the federal projects “Modern School”, “Digital Educational Environment.” It is assumed that the experiment can be implemented in the period 2020-2025. in several schools in each subject of the Russian Federation (at the discretion of regional ministries).
The initiative was prepared as a continuation of the supplement to the Federal State Educational Standard (GEF) discussed at the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation – expanding the course of mathematics at the initial level with the basics of programming and computer literacy, making changes to the traditional subject of “Computer Science”.
Also considered are the options for transforming the subject “Technology” into classes on robotics, virtual reality. The IRI believes that the format of accumulating the interests of children and adolescents can be expanded and more quickly introduced through optional school classes.
The experts OR chose e-sports disciplines, the teaching of which, in their opinion, should be introduced in schools. Among them are Dota 2, Hearthstone, Dota Underlords, FIFA 19, World of Tanks, Minecraft and CodinGame, RBC reports citing letters from Iran sent to the Ministry of Education.
It is indicated in the appendix to the letter that most of these games are generally recognized e-sports disciplines, in which tournaments are held at the level of individual countries and regions, as well as major international championships. The list contains games of various genres: real-time strategy (RTS), online multiplayer battle arenas (MOBA), collectible online card games and various simulations – football, tank.
The list also contains games that are not related to eSports – Minecraft and CodinGame. The first is a construction simulator, the most popular among school children. CodinGame, in turn, is not a game in the truest sense of the word: it is a special platform for learning programming in a game form.
In Iran, the importance of coordinating the methodological foundations of the elective is noted not only with the leadership of educational bodies, schools, the parent community, the teaching staff and departments of computer science teachers, but also with the Russian e-Sports Federation. And the federation, which is interested in developing its direction and the initiatives that were already taken to organize the school league, can help with the unification of students on its own platform.
Experts note a positive international experience. ESports is an educational discipline in the Scandinavian countries: since 2016, it has been included in compulsory programs at a number of schools in Sweden and Norway. In Denmark, the eSports Council is focused on interaction with the state, and official eSports tournaments have been held in US schools since 2018.
The Republican public association of e-sports in Kazakhstan, which coordinated the activities of disparate e-sports and coaches in e-sports, received last year’s comprehensive support from the country’s Ministry of Culture and Sports.
A number of eSports schools and online training services are already operating in the Russian Federation. The collaboration of elective classes with computer and e-sports associations operating in the regions, game associations, start-ups and young entrepreneurs promoting e-sports is possible.
And the skills acquired optionally at school can be applied in the higher education system. A specialty “Theory and Methods of Computer Sports” has been opened at the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth, and Tourism (SCOLIFC), and an educational program for professional retraining “eSports Management” has been developed at the Higher School of Economics.
